All the signs in April 1992 pointed towards a Labour victory. It seems everyone got it wrong. I can't remember ever feeling so low when the election returns started to pour in. the following day I put this song togrether, as opposed to writing it, using the tems and statement used throughout the election campaign. The song hopefully reflects the bitterness I felt and still feel today towards the media - mainly the tabloids who show know concern for the plight of working people - and the establishment who profit from their labour.

The pundits were wrong, they promised so much, so much
The spin doctors spun a song that was out of touch
There’s a sickness that’s deep from years of Tory rule
I sit and I weep, I’m an April 9th Fool, I’m an April 9th Fool

The Sun was shining, Murdoch was at the helm
The Mail was pining not welfare but personal wealth
There’s a sickness that’s deep when the barons of Fleet St. rule
I sit and I weep, I’m an April 9th Fool, I’m an April 9th Fool

It’s safe in our hands the grey leader smiled and said
But truth passed away for the want of an NH bed
There’s a sickness that’s deep when money is made to rule
All you that can’t pay, I’m an April 9th Fool, I’m an April 9th Fool

Hook

I’m an April 9th fool believing the things you say
An April 9th fool, paying the price each day,
I’m paying the price each day

Well everything’s fine now say the CBI
Your minimum wage deal would make our costs so high
There’s a sickness that’s deep when the dole queue’s long and cruel
All you on the heap, I’m an April 9th Fool, I’m an April 9th Fool

The stock Market smiled as money poured into the place
Whilst teachers returned to school with despair on their face
There’s a sickness that’s deep, in a run down dingy school
The future looks bleak, I’m an April 9th Fool, I’m an April 9th Fool

My lords, ladies and businessmen, there’s something I have to say
The day of judgement I hope’s not far away
The sickness is you, your selfish and oh so cruel
You’re April 9th winners, but everyday fools
